Turning Experience Into Better Healthcare
A significant part of my work involves converting experience into practical tools that healthcare teams can use.
Discuss a healthcare projectFrameworks & Ideas
These are working frameworks, developed at the bedside and in service leadership, and refined with teams. They exist to make good intentions repeatable — to turn something that depends on an individual's attention into something a whole unit can do reliably.
Four frameworks in active use
Each one begins with a recurring problem in everyday healthcare and ends with something a team can apply on a busy day.
The Child Experience
How care feels from the child's side of the cot.
Lessons From Practice
Cases that changed how a service was run.
Nursing Care Systems
Shift routines that hold under real workload.
Clinical & Operational Pathways
Where a patient goes, and who owns each step.
The Child Experience
The Child Experience is a developing framework for looking at healthcare through the eyes of a child.
Children experience hospitals differently from adults. They experience unfamiliar environments, separation, fear, pain, waiting, loss of control and communication that may not be designed for their level of understanding.
The framework asks hospitals to examine not only what treatment was delivered, but also how the child experienced that care. Its purpose is to make child-centred care visible, measurable and actionable.
Transform intangible empathy into visible, measurable and actionable care standards.
Lessons From Practice
Lessons From Practice is a series of short reflections drawn from everyday healthcare. Each lesson begins with a familiar clinical or organisational situation and examines the system, leadership or communication issue beneath it. Topics include escalation, handover, diagnostic bias, team alignment, patient experience, leadership, person dependency, accountability, communication failures and learning from near misses.
Nursing Care Systems
Nursing is the operational heartbeat of the ward. This framework focuses on reinforcing the structural processes that allow nursing staff to deliver consistent, high-level care.
Translating theoretical expectations into reliable, repeatable daily actions.
Clinical & Operational Pathways
Reducing operational ambiguity without overriding clinical judgement — a blueprint for systematic execution.
| ELEMENT | FOCUS | OUTCOME | METRIC | INTEGRATION |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What | Standardised intervention protocols based on current evidence. | Reduced variance in core treatments. | Protocol adherence rates. | EHR order sets. |
| Who | Clear role definition during critical phases of care. | Elimination of task redundancy or omission. | Role clarity surveys. | Shift briefing tools. |
| When | Time-bound triggers for review and escalation. | Prevention of delayed interventions. | Time-to-treatment KPIs. | Automated clinical alerts. |
